Pan Masters Steel Orchestra celebrates their 20th year of bringing steel drum music to the Washington, DC area with their fourth recording, "On De Road." Pan Masters is most well-known for their performances in the annual DC Caribbean Carnival, and this CD is a collection of their carnival music from 2002-2004. Fans of Trinidadian calypso and soca music will recognize hits from artists such as Shadow, David Rudder, Len "Boogsie" Sharpe and Merchant. Also featured on the CD are several "Bomb Tunes:" non-calypso tunes played in a calypso style. The Bomb Tune is a long-standing tradition in Trinidad Carnival, and listeners will enjoy the calypso treatment of songs from the Beatles, Bee Gees and more. The intricate musical arrangements were crafted by Kristen Jones, Roger Greenidge, and Lennard Jack. There are 13 players on the CD, which is actually a small version of the group!

In 1985, Pan Masters was formed by 11 individuals out of the Trinidad & Tobago Steelband of Washington, DC. Today the membership is quite diverse in terms of nationalities and age groups. Pan Masters' carnival "roadside" is comprised of about 30 players hailing from Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica, Guyana, Grenada, Barbados, St. Thomas, Anguilla, and the U.S. Several children of the original members (as young as 10 years old) now play with the group.

Pan Masters is a community-based organization and is committed to preserving and strengthening Caribbean culture. They offer pan classes, and host events such as the Pan Jamboree, Junior Pan Solo Competition and the DC Calypso Monarch competition. They have been adjudged Best Playing Steelband at DC Carnival 10 times in its 11-year history, and won first place in Baltimore Panorama from 1993-1998. They were also featured on the album "Bon Appetit" by Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer, which won the Grammy for Best Children's Album of 2003.
