NOTES Daily Practice is a reference to the 7 chant meditations that are sung/vibrated/practiced in the early hours of the morning by students of Kundalini Yoga (as taught by Yogi Bhajan) all over the world. The practice of doing this is part of what is called sadhana, a collection of different types of spiritual practices that can include yoga, prayer recitation, breathwork, meditation, chanting, seva, and other practices to elevate, expand, and purify the consciousness. Sadhana is practiced by many different spiritual traditions, and paths, in both the East and the West. Sadhana also means the spiritual work or piece of work a person decides to do. Musically, this particular rendition of these chants is groove driven by the gutsy vocals of Sat Kartar, backed with a world music potpourri of djembe, guitar, bass, tamboura, and temple bells.. This recording happened in an organic manner, similar to the way that musicians in the early days of recording created their records. They would mainly play and tour live, and then record what they had done, almost as an afterthought. Daily Practice producer Dan Charnas, also a yoga teacher, was leading sadhana at Golden Bridge Yoga in Los Angeles, yoga studio of world renowned yoga teacher Gurmukh Kaur, in the fall of 2000, every Friday morning and brought in Sat Kartar, and premier percussionist Joelle Virgil Vierset (Les Groovy Mantras), and for many months, into 2001, created live sadhana chanting, for large groups of enthusiatic sadhana goers. This recording was literally "chanted" into being. BIO Sat Kartar Khalsa has been teaching, recording, and performing chant music, devotional and classical kirtan (music sung in call and response style) for 30 years. Her personal journey with these potent spiritual tools was initially orchestrated, in 1971, when she stumbled upon Kundalini and Naad Yoga (Yoga of Sound), Indian classical music, and Sikhism, and became a student of her spiritual teacher, Yogi Bhajan. Her childhood was full of music. Both parents played piano and there was music around of every kind--musicals, standards, and classical music. Sat Kartar played piano at 5, guitar at 14, sang in choirs, and picked out all kinds of music on piano and guitar, from the Beatles, to folkmusic, to Spanish classical "Malaguena". She trained in ballet, and other dance forms. In college, she was gigging, doing covers of singer-songwriters and folk artists. One big influence was Joni Mitchell, whose open tunings and unusual melodies were a doorway and vicarious permission to explore uncharted territory, musically. Trying to find her lyric voice for the tunes she was creating, she tried a Kundalini yoga class, hoping for some kind of release from songwriter's block. It was her experiences with the mesmerizing hypnotic quality of chanted mantra sounds, in these yoga classes, that changed the course of her musical journey, from aspiring singer-songwriter wannabe, to an evolving kirtan singer in a baby-new genre of music(in this music era) that is as old as time:chant music. Sat Kartar has worked in folk-rock, chant, kirtan, bluegrass,and techno bands, and sung on over 22 different recordings, with artists such as Antion Vikram(formerly of the Animals) to kirtan artists Krishna Das and Wah!.
