Changes in Tyme is nothing less than a celebration of music. In it Jean Severin fuses Caribbean rhythms into different strains of popular music to bring us a rich, varied, and captivating brand of music, that no matter one's musical preference there are songs for one's enjoyment. There is jazz in the manner of Grover Washington; fusions of reggae, lovers' rock, blues and funk; fusions of soca, cadence, jazz and blues in the manner of Strings; sentimental ballads in the manner of Elton John and Frank Sinatra; and fusions of reggae, hip-hop, and pop. Jean Severin was born and raised in the sleepy village of Laborie, at the southern tip of the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. At eighteen he emigrated to Canada where he promptly enrolled at the prestigious Elli Kassner Guitar Academy, a school where such famous guitarists as Leona Boyd and Jesse Cook learnt their craft. Jean studied classical guitar up to grade eight, the highest level being grade ten, and then studied four years of jazz guitar. Leaving Canada (early 2001), where he was working as a freelance guitarist and performing at classical guitar concerts, Jean returned to St. Lucia for, as he says, musical inspiration and to begin making a reality of his musical vision of fusing St. Lucian indigenous folk rhythms into popular strains of music to come up with something different and uniquely St. Lucian. Changes in Tyme is the culmination of Jean's sojourn in St. Lucia, and represents the beginning of putting his musical vision into reality.
