As one of Chicago's premiere Chapman Stick® artists, Jason Blake generates excitement each time he performs. Whether playing with his own band, session work or solo, audiences are often introduced to this unique instrument. The Stick® incorporates the range of both a guitar and a bass while employing a two-handed tapping technique. This method allows two rhythms to be played simultaneously with each hand playing a different part. "This is the instrument that I was always searching for. It enables me to incorporate my early piano training with my love for the low end sound of the bass", explains Jason.

With his debut album, The Absence of Color, Jason set out to create a sound not yet heard on the music scene. For the recording of this instrumental CD, Jason utilized the range of tones of his Chapman Stick Bass®, an eight-string version of the instrument. He was joined by percussionist Eric Yacula, who laid the foundation for the music with a variety of instruments including the drums and the classical Indian tabla. The result is a combination of improvised rock with world and ambient undertones.
