The music of Congregation B'nai Jeshurun (BJ) on Manhattan's Upper West Side -an exotic mix of Sephardic, European, Hasidic, Latin American, and Middle Eastern melodies, accompanied by a unique assortment of musical instruments - is a major factor in the standing-room only crowds it draws for services. With the release of its first CD in 1999, With Every Breath: The Music of Shabbat at BJ, people outside the congregation have been able to experience this evocative interpretation of liturgical music. TekiYah: Echoes of the High Holy Days at BJ takes the congregation's musical journey one step further. Hauntingly sung by BJ's hazzan, Ari Priven and its three rabbis, Marcelo Bronstein, J. Rolando Matalon, and Felicia Sol, TekiYah brings the profoundly moving High Holy Day liturgy to life in a way that balances innovation and tradition, the familiar and the exotic, East and West - harmonizing the diverse strains of Jewish experience across centuries and continents.
