Mike Stein

What an amazing career! Mike Stein started his musical journey at the age of ten, picking up the violin and then singing in the synagogue. As a teenager he appeared in the role of Peter in the Original Broadway cast of Jesus Christ Superstar and then continued to perform in two other Broadway shows and in the original road show of Tommy, the rock opera.

In his twenties Mike joined the United States Navy Band in Washington, DC, where he played fiddle and sang for four presidents at the White House and all around the world, including China and Sweden. During his 17 year career with the Navy (he is now retired), he played on the Grand Ol' Opry, Nashville Now Show and Good Morning America, premiering a song that he wrote in support of the Armed Forces in Desert Storm called "We Are With You" (Chapell/Warner Bros). During his career in the Navy, Mike began writing songs for children, which eventually led to a Grammy Award nomination in 1999 for his original composition "Dreamosaurus." His recordings, now on Rounder Records (originally on Caedmon/RCA) have sold over 100,000 units.

Mike also recorded fiddle for many internationally renowned artists such as the late Eva Cassidy, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Tom Paxton, Jonathan Edwards and Tom McCutcheon.

His career in Jewish music is equally impressive. He records and plays violin for Craig Taubman and has toured with the Robyn Helzner trio for six years. He recently appeared on KCET television in a Hannukah special, playing violin for Craig Taubman and the great Theodore Bikel. Presently he is the cantor at a Temple Aliyah (Woodland Hills, Calif.) a Conservative synagogue of over 800 families.

Throughout his journey, Mike has been recognized for his achievements. He is a graduate of State University of New York (Regents College) where he earned a bachelor of science with a concentration in sociology. In the Navy, he received the Navy Commendation and Navy Achievement medals. In children's music has received the Parent's Choice Award and American Library Association award for "Dinosaur Rock."

In 2005, Mike won a Grammy Award (Best Musical Album for Children) for his performance on "cELLAbration," a tribute album to Ella Jenkins. Mike shared credits with Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton, Riders in the Sky, Sweet Honey in the Rock and Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer.

Mike has a wonderful wife Kelley, and three sons Jacob, Justin and Jared. Together they have a family band called the Rolling Steins. That perhaps is Mike's greatest award-a close-knit family that loves to create music together.
