The Baal Shem Tov Band has a two-fold mission: first to convey the joy and transcendent quality of Chassidic music using traditional tunes made relevant to today's culture and second to pass down the traditions of this culture to as large an audience as possible. The Baal Shem Tov Band is a multi-cultural, multi-racial, and multi-denominational group of musicians and the music we play is a celebration of the soul. It reaches across boundaries of race, religion and belief. The music we play is Chassidic Rock - music based on Chassidic Nigunim (wordless tunes that are repetitive and have a strong beat). Like Klezmer (which we do not play), this music tends to unite a very diverse Jewish community. Jewish music as an art form has always drawn on whatever culture surrounded it. Although there is a certain amount of nostalgia singing Jewish tunes the way our parents or grandparents sang them, in some ways, this makes them inaccessible to many who may only appreciate and be receptive to music that is popular at the moment. The music of the Baal Shem Tov Band doesn't change the traditional melodies very much.
