With the help of some of Utah's most versatile musicians, Dave Shipley weaves his classical guitar into a rich tapestry of acoustic gypsy-jazz. Classical fusion, world-beat, Latin-surf-disco, whatever you call it, this CD shines! It glows in the dark! It smolders, ignites and explodes with jubilant energy! Pronounced as it is spelled, Gitana means gypsy in Spanish. The title draws from Dave's past decade of wandering adventures. From a solar eclipse in Mexico, through the coastal rainforests of California, and back to the red rocks of Utah's Zion, Gitana reflects the mystery and passion generated from his multicultural interactions. From Jazz to Classical, Folk to Funk, Dave Shipley performs all styles of popular and traditional guitar music. Customizing his music to fit the exact needs of his audience, Dave shifts from Beethoven to Van Morrison with grace and ease. A composer as well, a selection of Dave Shipley's original music is now available on compact disc. His new release, GITANA is a marvelous manifestation of his creativity and musical diversity. Dave's summer schedule includes art festivals, outdoor concerts and plenty of weddings. During the winter season the local ski resorts keep him booked. You'll also find Dave at some of Utah's finest dining establishments, providing the perfect accompaniment to your culinary experience. Corporate events are his bread and butter, but your private party is the icing on the cake. Wedding ceremonies and receptions, birthday and retirement parties virtually any occasion will be enhanced by Dave's musical presence. Dave Shipley was about 16 when he first picked up his father's acoustic guitar. Inspired by progressive rock bands like Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull, Dave taught himself a few simple chords and began to rock. It wasn't long before he was reading music and writing his own songs. Continuing his education at the University of Utah, Dave received formal instruction from renowned classical guitarist Todd Woodbury. Not needing amplification, Dave's acoustic guitar accompanied him everywhere. Coffeehouses, campfires, and jam sessions were fertile opportunities to learn new styles and collaborate with others. A strong Latin influence began to flavor his writing as he spent increasing time adventuring in Mexico. Staying close to the sun, Dave took up residence in Rockville, Utah near Zion National Park. Working as an irrigation canal sediment removal engineer a.k.a. ditch digger, Dave's hair grew long and unruly. He was soon singing his "Gypsy Song" in the local cafes and cantinas. His reputation grew and he landed several high exposure, paying gigs despite his bohemian appearance. In Salt Lake City Dave formed The Solar Rollers to debut his rock-opera "Eclipse". Down south he was playing lead guitar with IN2IT. It was during this time that most of the music for his first CD GITANA was written. As the hot desert sun set on Rockville, the fog-drenched moon rose over Point Reyes National Seashore. Dave's travels had brought him to a coastal paradise and a new chapter in his career. Diversity is celebrated in California and Dave's eclectic style blended well with the post modern archaic revival folk-jazz fusion scene that he encountered there. Dave cut his teeth on jazz chops, added standards to his list and wrote more than ever. Promising to return, Dave left Marin in 1999 to refocus on his classical roots in Utah. Since his reappearance in Park City, Dave Shipley has performed innumerous private and public events, earning a reputation and a living as a first call solo guitarist. His new CD, GITANA exemplifies the influences that have shaped Shipley's career over the last ten years. Latin, African, Norse and Arabic themes are interpreted by some of Salt Lake's finest instrumentalists. The musical content is profoundly visual, evoking strong images of exotic lands and high adventure. From humble beginnings to high-class resorts, Dave Shipley continues to put the life into live music. Thus composing the song that is his own life.
