Exciting guitar passages coupled with the enchanting melodies of flute make Calima a sound that lingers in the listener's ear long after the concert hall has emptied. San Diego based guitar duo Alejandro Guillen and Jimmy Patton, and flautist Louisa West perform music from around the world including South America, the Middle East and Spain. Their music styles range from Flamenco Rumba to Brazilian Bossa Nova, and Traditional Greek to Persian touched with a Latin flavor. Both Guillen and Patton studied under Fred Benedetti of Benedetti & Svoboda master guitar duo. In 2001, Patton won first place in the nation-wide Guitarmageddon Competition and claimed the title of " Best Unsigned Guitarist in the Nation," topping more than 3,000 guitarists across the United States. Patton has shared the stage with Grammy award-winning Stanley Jordon, Laurence Juber of Paul McCartney's "Wings," Adrian Legg, Preston Reed, virtuoso rock guitarist Tony Macalpine and keyboardist Derek Sherinian of "Dream Theater. In 1995, Guillen won a scholarship to study privately with Fred Benedetti in San Diego, California. During that time, Guillen attended master classes with Classical Guitar Masters Pepe Romero, Antigoni Goni, and Scott Tenant. Guillen has also studied extensively with concert Flamenco guitarist Diego Corriente of Spain and more recently touring concert guitarist Jeff Linksy. Flautist West, who has performed with legendary Sammy Nestico, composer/arranger for the Count Basie Band. West has performed extensively on the East Coast with artists including Grammy-nominated flautist Nestor Torres, National Geographic films composer/jazz pianist Steve Danez, Grogus (Latin jazz group that performed for the Dali Lama), and guitarist Nestor Zayas who has performed with the Gipsy Kings.
