UKRAINIAN SONG: NEW WORLD VARIANT

VARIANCES by PARIS TO KYIV is music from the deepest layers of an ancient culture with a strikingly contemporary edge. Kochan collaborates with premier bandura player Julian Kytasty, joined by jazz violist Richard Moody, West African percussionist Evans Coffie,
percussionist Henry Zacharias and multi-instrumentalist Martin Colledge. Exotic instruments such as Northumbrian pipes, udu, djembe and buffalo drum are woven with voices, bandura and viola into multi-layered songs that fuse
elements of pre-Christian ritual songs, fragments of medieval chants and contemporary polytonality and jazz
riffs and improvisation.

REVIEWS:

"Alexis Kochan is a Winnipeg musician steeped in the musical traditions of Ukraine... Kochan and musical partner Julian Kytasty take traditional melodies and songs and rearrange them- envigorating them along the way by bringing to the mix such exotic (to Ukrainian tradition, anyway) instruments as Northumbrian pipes, udu drum, djembe, buffalo drum and the viola of Richard Moody.
The result is often enthralling, always pleasing and certainly no less than fascinating. If you're a fan of traditional Ukrainian music- or even Loreena McKennitt and Enya- give this a try."
