All Genres > World > Eastern European > COMPILATION OF HUNGARIAN FOLK MUSICIANS AND SINGERS IN NORTH AME: Visszhang [Echo] Thirty years have passed since the Táncház phenomenon was born in Budapest. Since that time, the movement has grown, stepped past the boundaries of Hungary, happily dissolved most of the barriers between young, urban folk musicians and their elderly, authentic village "masters," and provided the world with a unique, new model for reviving traditional music and dance. This CD is the first compilation to showcase the North American echo of the Hungarian Táncház movement. The CD's breadth - involving a good selection of the nearly twenty groups that exist from Vancouver to New York - the scope of its instrumental music and singing - presenting styles from Dunántul to Moldva - and its surprisingly accomplished musicianship all stand as testament to the power of this amazing revival movement. The artists featured on this CD represent a remarkably diverse spectrum. From Feketeföld, whose founding arguably pre-dates the Táncház movement, to recently born, up-and-coming groups like Forrás and Vadkelet; from the work of independent musicians like Rokka and Kata Harsaczki, to dance-group related efforts like that of the Csürdöngölõ girls choir; from groups rooted in Hungarian communities, like Szikra and Kõvirag, to bands composed of non-Hungarians, like Jómóka and Szászka; from bands accomplished in a broad range of regional styles, like Életfa and Cifra, to Kecskeszem, which specializes in the music of Gyimes and Moldva - the diversity of this compilation makes it a truly polyphonic echo of the Táncház movement. Perhaps the most poignant "viszhang" is Andrea Speck's rendition of the Csángó song "Ez a kis lészped," which was first heard in the West in 1976 on Hungaria Records' pioneering production of Zoltán Kallós' field recordings, when the publishing of such recordings in Hungary or Transylvania was impossible. This is truly a direct echo of the original source, and appropriately reflects the progress of the Táncház movement and what the future may hold, particularly here in North America.
