Seattle's Black Cat Orchestra has played for bars, weddings, silent films and cafes since 1991. They perform old pop songs from the Mediterranean, Eastern Europe and Asia and elsewhere, with a dreamy and cinematic feel. The Black Cat Orchestra's first, self-titled album features songs from Greece, Korea, Turkey, Mexico, Bulgaria and the Ukraine. Each is rendered with verve and subtlety, and a wry but respectful disregard for the rules of stylistic protocol. Shortly after the album's release, it inspired David Byrne to hire them as a back-up band for a song on his album, Feelings.
