Afenginn means intoxication and strength in old Norse and is the name of an unrestrained and unorthodox orchestra which plays their own original mix of klezmer, balkan, classical music and Nordic open spaces - "bastard ethno" in the orchestra´s own words! Afenginn was formed in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2002 by five musicians with very different musical backgrounds. With their different angles of music, the result is an original and virtuoso music that grows out of the roots of world and folk music. Afenginn's musical melting pot contains a jumble of styles, odd balkan-meters, sheer klezmer-madness, catchy melodies, but also meditative and melancholic impressions of Nordic spaces. Afenginn soon became a very popular underground band in Copenhagen and now, 3 years later, the Danish "bastard-ethno" orchestra has played more than 150 successful concerts all over Scandinavia, the Faroe Islands and in several European countries. Afenginn is one of the most interesting and upcoming live acts in the Scandinavian world/folk scene. Afenginn has also performed live with a complete symphony orchestra at several occasions in 2005. Afenginn´s first full-length album "Retrograd" was released in 2004 on TUTL Record and won an Danish World Awards for "Best World Album" in 2005. This is achieved by doing 'live' recording in the studio together with great guest musicians. Except for the five gentlemen on respectively - violin, clarinet, mandolin, bass and drums, also accordion, brass quartet, string quartet, 'garbage-o-phone' and xylophone can be heard. The music on 'Retrograd' spans from up-tempo power-humppa, over classical soundings to sophisticated sounds of trash. A superb album!
