Dulcimer wiz Abelson has some big guns helping him out on his third release. Guests Sam Bush and Vassar Clements contribute their own brand of wizardry, and Abelson goes toe-to-toe quite nicely with them, thank you. He combines a confident grasp of technique with an intuitive musicality. The tunes here are a selection of Celtic, Appalachian and bluegrass staples such as "Rocky Road to Dublin," "June Apple," "Blackberry Blossom" and "Devil's Dream." The arrangements are clean and smoothly varied, with little of the pasted-on jazz and New Age froufrou so rampant these days.

Abelson blasts into the first track, a medley built on Bela Fleck's "UFO Tofu Theme," in grand, rattly fashion. The sweet, simple "Margaret's Waltz/Amazing Grace" features Clement's trademark rubber-band phrasing on fiddle. The solo "Lucy and Slipknot" has a lovely, drifty quality. Spirited and craftily played, this could well be Abelson's breakthrough release.
