Listening to Sandeep's music, it may not be obvious that it was all inspired by a hip hop album. "'Midnight Marauders' by A Tribe Called Quest was one of the first albums I ever bought", Sandeep points out. "Its ability to pick me up, regardless of whatever mood I was in, made me want to start making music. But I didn't really do anything about it until I got to college and female friends started asking me to sing for them! I tried out for the acapella group Penn Masala and that's how I really got started." In college Sandeep chose to study finance not realizing that music, although not his major, would become a major part of his after-college life. With no formal training, but fueled by the opportunity to take his interest to another level, Sandeep taught himself to play the piano, write and produce music. He continued to work with Penn Masala for 4 years; producing an album, performing around the globe, and writing his own music. "I did everything backwards", explains Sandeep. "Most people train in music, so they make songs. I had to train myself so I could figure out how to make sense of the songs that were in my head." Never limited to one style, Sandeep's music is fresh, innovative, and entertaining- a rare find in an artist. Although Sandeep's Indian roots often surface in his productions, he always incorporates the sound in a manner that is approachable to all listeners. Through this journey, Sandeep hopes to break down genre and cultural barriers within music today. "I want to get hip-hop heads to appreciate classical Carnatic violin. I want to get a jazz bassist to bump my club songs. But most of all, I want to make music that you can listen to and feel like you know me."
