_________ THE RIDE Tim's debut CD, The Ride, was five years in the making and has been described as a lo-fi approach to RB. The CD celebrates old school analog gear and live intruments, in a 30 ips excursion into reel to reel tape. "It took me a really, really, really long time to release this album*, mainly because I was trying to beat the world record for 'Most Time to Finegle and Tweak an Album,' held by the group Boston. I didn't manage to beat it but I did put the Pro back in Procrastination, taking yet another art form to a whole new level." Tim's music has been likened to Prince, Thomas Dolby, Stevie Wonder, Remi Shand and Jamiroquai "It's always funny to hear what people have to say about your music. If I had to describe it myself, I'd use the lo-fi B tag; it's not really too broody or political like alt R&B. But it's definitely old-skool-technology-style, with real plate reverbs, whacky guitar pedals, plus real drums, bass, horns, strings and tube amps. I'm happy to say that I am totally proud of this record, and it really represents that timeframe of me as an artist." Recorded at Pots n' Panz Studios in Montreal by Goran Petrovic, The Ride joins the ranks of great-sounding album projects recorded on vintage gear and analog tape. "Look, I'm the first one to sing the praises of the new creativity and incorporating technology into one's music - but not at the expense of it. I didn't want to go that route with this album - the entire performance, recording and mixing processes were done without a computer in sight. We used some loops and drum machine twiddly bits to enhance the ambience, but the spirit of the record is really a throwback to the day where you would have to go in to the studio and have your shit down; I mean *really* play. None of this cut-and-paste stuff, no auto-tuning your voice, no quantizing the drum track afterwards. The product you create is always, without a doubt, inextricably linked to the process you use." _____________ THE HISTORY Started in 1997 and before, The Ride is a culmination of years of writing, recording and fine tuning. Here's a retro-spective: 1989 Tim starts taking electronic music courses at McGill University, holeing himself up after hours in the secluded EMS (Electronic Music Studio) learning about Stockhausen tape-looping techniques, Akai samplers and how to survive 8 hours of sheer MIDI-induced hell. He takes this knowledge and starts demo-ing his own tunes 1990 meets the soon-to-be-Legendary Goran Petrovic at a recording session at McGill's ;Studio A. Discovers Goran to be one of the only sound recording students in the history of McGill to ever get a cool drum sound out of their gear 1991 buys a four-track recorder and a Korg M-1 keyboard and, to the joy of his neighbours and roomates, continues to demo his stuff in his apartment 1993 takes his four-track and keyboard with him to continue writing whilst playing in various cruise ship orchestras. His portable studio fits nicely in his underwear drawer 1996 does some recording sessions as drummer for Goran at ;L'Office Studios (formerly ;La-La Land). L'office changes hands and becomes "Pots n' Pans under the direction of Lyon Records and Robert Goldfarb. Tim starts playing and singing on Robert's pop development project. 1997 Tim continues to demo some of his tunes at "Pots n' Pans," not aware that his demos are starting to sound pretty damn good.; He realizes that these songs are recorded well enough to make a real rekkidd. 1998 Arrives in Santa Fe, New Mexico after a Drive Across America. Before leaving Montreal, he had stopped at Dino Giancola's Detour Studios; to have his now-finished album mastered. 1998 Comes back from Santa Fe with no money left. Starts work as a freelance writer/ arranger. 2002 Realizes that it's been 4 years since the recording portion of this CD was finished, and it's a crime not to release it. Starts work on the other steps - ie graphic art and enhanced CD. 2003 Sends the CD to be pressed.
