West Coast Harem was originally a recording project formed in 1994. The concept was to build a modern, funkified, psychedelic rare groove from both synthetic and organic sources. To use the neo-DJ mentality with a live player approach.

West Coast Harem featured many different players but it's root was a basic combo of John Basil (guitar), R. Scott (keyboards), Craig Tiegen (drums) and Jim Haas (bass).

The band became a live staple in Southern and Northern California soon after the release of their first 12" vinyl release "Silver Kiss" (Insta-Noise Records). "Introducing...West Coast Harem" was self-released in 1997 and captured the change in direction to a more eclectic jazz/funk sound.

The band disbanded in 1999 after five-years citing creative difference.
