Raised in Long Island, New York, the name Shabazz will be immediately familiar to many for their 1990 club smash "Glad You're In My Life" on RCA, which has gone on to become a bit of a cult tune on soul and urban floors alike, and still sounds wonderful now a heady 12 years on. The story actually started a few years before this through the release of " Takes Me Higher " on the independent Coslit label - actually founded and started by Omari's father in an effort to help his son's aspiration of a career in the music industry. Back then Omari Shabazz was originally Paul Stewart in the band which consisted of 4 friends and actually changed his name to Shabazz when the group split as most people referred to him by that name anyway. The following years saw him progress into producing and fine tune his writing skills, working with a range of artists as diverse as Frankie Beverley and Maze to names like Public Enemy and Ice Cube. Fast forward to present day and you'll find the softly spoken, unassuming Mr Shabazz now residing in Atlanta, Georgia, where he wrote and produced nearly all of his debut album " Better Day," an 18 song set of life's experiences, wonderfully put together, musically influenced by bands of the seventies like Earth, Wind & Fire, the Ohio Players and Funkadelic and heralded by many as one of the best soul albums of 2001 / 2.
