"The Book of Ed" is a setting of 36 poems for modern chamber ensemble and 3 actors. It is the dark and funny account of a boy - who is strangely reminiscent of the mythical character Oedipus - growing up in East Texas. It was originally performed as theatre winning awards in Austin, TX. Patrick composed the music and produced the recording. The CD includes a 23 page booklet of the poems and pictures of the cast and production crew. Poet Mel Kenne is the author of many books of poetry and translations. He grew up in East Texas, travelled the world, and has resided in Istanbul for the last 13 years where he teaches. "The Book of Ed" are dark but funny poems than spun off while Mel was writing a "non-Freudian treatise on the Oedipal Complex". Patrick Boland grew up in 1960's rural South Carolina - the oldest of six whose father was the only pharmacist and often the mayor - Patrick graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in piano and music theory and composition. Seeking a somewhat different environment, he moved to Texas in the early 1980's. There, he split his time between San Antonio and Austin (taking time out for a few years in India), where he performed, composed, and taught piano in the artist's teaching cooperative he co-founded. Relocating to the beautiful mountains of Asheville, NC in 2002, Patrick now performs with many of the area's best musicians, and happily teaches and composes in his studio overlooking the Swannanoa River and Mount "Pointy-Top." Besides "The Book of Ed", Patrick's work includes many dozens of instrumental and vocal jazz compositions, an operetta about the inspiring life of St. Francis, a string quartet, a trio for flute, cello and piano, and numerous cycles of art songs and piano compositions Also available at CD Baby: "Notes To Myself" is a collection of 18 original piano solos that incorporate both jazz and contemporary classical components of harmony and rhythm with hints of Carla Bley, Erik Satie, Bill Evans, Dave Holland, and Bela Bartok.
