Hollow City is the stunning new debut album by the Orange County based Unit F who manage to blend old school punk roots with aggressively intense metal tinged hard rock with psychotic, death pop stylings. Produced by legendary veteran Ron Goudie (Gwar, TSOL, Channel 3, Agent Orange, Mojo Nixon, Christian Death), Hollow City is a deep and musically varied album. Unit F began the recording of Hollow City with the objective of bringing out the visceral energy of thier explosive live stage performances for which they have become known, translating thier punk roots through sheets of heavy, metal influenced guitars. Hollow City contains 14 tracks (one hidden bonus)of solid material, combining issues oriented lyrics, old school roots and Unit F's own brand of audio thrash and heavy groove. Songwriting, a strong point of the band shared by all five members, is given wide latitude in both the feel and the flavor of the fourteen songs. The title track, Hollow City, with its Dick Dale inspired intro and heavy guitar drive (courtesy of D. "Skytzo" Willis) is a look at the depersonailiation of the individual in a commercialized society. Moth to a Flame on the other hand, talks about having families just because we can, and is being featured on the Planned Parenthood Comp (Fall 2000). Unit F achieves alot of dynamics for a twin guitar band. Bassist/guitarist Steve Kastrinos penned several songs, which has Steve on guitar and Skytzo dropping the bass lines (a change up which occures live as well). Most noteable is the pedal to the metal punk burner "Daddy Don't", a wrenching song about inscest, while "What About it" is a song which wonders loudly about CIA involvement in the cocaine trade. "Snew" rails about the religious right in your life in ernest, while "Jesus in Pasta" relates how a Christ sighting in a plate of spaghetti was actually taken seriously. While Unit F definitely has some axes to grind ("Salvadore BBQ, Mr. Machine & Cacquitos Plastico-Kieth Friend & Mel Torment), they also know how to be tounge in cheek. "My Baby Barfed", for instance is Mel Torments ugly American caricature at work in Baja, Mexico, while "Skytzo", the self proclaimed metal retentive punk, shows that he can actually write songs about the way he drives ("Subject to Change") when hes not reading the World Weekly News ("Its True"). Hollow City even has some acoustics in "Youth Anthem" a song for all the municiple fathers who are busy shutting down all ages clubs across the county. Unit F brings back the heavy in punk rock, and puts its fire breathing image on the line in Hollow City. Born of fire and bathed in sweat, Unit F never relents and always moves with animal aggression. Perservence and self reliance, the struggle never ends!
