TV Set is a Chicago music project, currently a one man band, which began in 1986 as two guys (guitar, bass and drum machine) playing stark experimental industrial and punk. They expanded to a three piece with a girl who played synth and switched the drum machine on and off. Their first gig was a Wednesday (“Industrial Night”!) at the Metro in 1987, and their next was a month later at the Limelight. They thought they would be famous in no time. They were wrong. Weirdly enough, the Limelight had them back again. After a reconfiguration (the guy bassist on drums and the girl on bass), the sound degenerated further into a beer sodden no wave/post punk sludge. They played out relentlessly (Cubby Bear, Dreamerz, Avalon, Club Stodola) until 1988. Their first release was a home made (DIY!) cassette entitled “Disgrace,” recorded live in a basement (and sounded like it too). Divorce and drinking broke up the band, but TV Set continued to play out as a solo act with backing tapes until 1990.

The bassist guy rejoined the project in 1991, and TV Set played the Around The Coyote Festival and Phyllis’ Musical Inn. The sound veered erratically between perky pop punk and synth-saturated death rock. After they self-released a vinyl 7” in 1995, they played the Dome Room, did a live set on WHPK college radio, were played on the Q101 local show and once more thought that fame was around the corner. After another round of local gigs they called it quits again.

In a brilliant marketing move, the solo version of TV Set spent 1997-2001 calling his project Idiot Box (not to be confused with the other 20 bands called Idiot Box). He appeared on local cable access’ Chic-A-Go-Go, was demo tape of the week on Q101’s local show, and played Fireside Bowl, Big Horse and Thurston’s. After a stint as bassist in Towers Open Fire from 2001-2002 (which played Empty Bottle, Nevin’s Live, and Beat Kitchen among others), he decided to return to the name TV Set and release new stuff, so here it is. Not retro, just guitar-based post punk, with drum machine and synth programming influenced by new wave, industrial and techno.
