In the far-off realm that was San Francisco in the early 80s, three young women (college DJs and roommates) started playing music together with their friends, mostly on Tuesday nights at a rather indescribable dive bar in the Tenderloin district. At the turn of the century, these decidedly older women started banging out music together once more.

Named after an obscure 1968 exploitation flick, She Mob consists of Diane Wallis and Sue Hutchinson trading places on bass and guitar (with Diane wielding a violin when the mood strikes), and Lisa McElroy on drums. All three sing and most She Mob songs are collaborative. Alan Korn, formerly of the Doubters, Cat Heads, and X-Tal, joined the group a few years ago to play bass and guitar. Strangely, he was hanging around the pre-She Mob household in the 80s as well.

She Mob's debut "Cancel the Wedding" was listed in Greil Marcus' "Real Life Rock Top 10," on Salon.com (#2 out of 10). Robert Christgau placed it on his "Honorable Mention" list in the Village Voice's Pazz & Jop Poll, describing the sound as "three women in wigs [who] shout their shouts and tell their weird, unassuming tales." We've been described in print as the "Velvet Underground jamming with the Melvins and your mother" and "scrappy punk and haunting lo-fi pop."

She Mob's CDs are available on our own label, Spinster Playtime. They were recorded during marathon weekend sessions, engineered, mixed and mastered by Myles Boisen (of Splatter Trio and countless amazing improv bands). The emphasis is on being fun-filled, because if playing in a rock band in your 30s for audiences of hip 20-somethings wearing retro clothing and smoking all-natural cigarettes isn't fun--then what is? Anyhoo, the best part of any live show is getting to wear wigs and we think most bands would agree.
