Hirudin formed in early 2003 out of the remains of a couple of bands you've never heard of, bands that did things like play Phyllis' Musical Inn in Chicago once then break up. The three founding members of Hirudin-Dan on drums, Michael on bass and Kyle on guitars/vocals-had played together before (and Kyle and Michael were high-school friends back in their hometown of Houston) and decided to try again, with the intention starting of a Drive Like Jehu-ish band.

The result, of course, sounded nothing like that. All fans of the D.C. post-punk scene, Hirudin instead veered in that direction.

Dan left in the summer of 2003 to go to law school, and the search began for a replacement. After what felt like a laborious search, Hirudin found Mike Allen, aka Mallen, a Champaign native and veteran of several other bands whose names you'd have no reason to recognize. Mallen joined Hirudin in December of 2003.

With Mike in their ranks, Hirudin played constantly and, in September of 2004, self-released their debut eight-song EP, Neither Created Nor Destroyed. It's available at local stores and through the band's website, www.hirudin.net. The record was mastered by Carl Saff with artwork by Jay Ryan.

Mike Allen left in the spring of 2005 to pursue school in his hometown of Champaign, Ill., making him the second casualty to higher education the band has suffered. But Hirudin quickly found a replacement in Jonathan Sarmiento, a drum-playing, song-singing, graphic-designing badass.

Hirudin continue to hassle friends about shows at Schuba's, Subterranean, The Bottom Lounge, The Mutiny, the Lyons Den, the Fireside Bowl and others, playing with other bands you've never heard of-but they've occasionally played with recognizable names like PILOT TO GUNNER (Arena Rock), CAT ON FORM (Southern Records), THE ONE A.M. RADIO (Level-Plane), DAN ANDRIANO (Alkaline Trio), HANALEI (Thick Records) and TRISTEZA (Tiger Style).

A split with pop-punk legends J Church is planned for the summer of 2005.
