The concept behind the NOIRKESTRA is driven by "no holds barred" improvisation and experimentation. Musicians (as well as members of our society) are always being told what to do and often times their creative beauty is being trampled on, rather than showcased. The NOIRKESTRA is an outlet for creative energy, freedom of thought, and good ole fashion FUN!!!!

Shoshke-Rayzl, a Yiddish name for the guitarist, inspired this project with her contagious love of psychedelic, funk, rock, middle eastern, and dance/trance music. We jammed a few times in the studio, and I realized she shared a certain aesthetic with violinist Sylvia Mincewicz, who creates amazing sounds with her electric violin and efx boxes. I came to the conclusion that an avant garde CD was necessary to exploit both Sylvia and Shosh's talents, and I asked drummer Matt Baranello if he'd be willing to do a studio session with us at Grisly Labs. My bass playing is very dub inspired, rock driven, and was put the test many times with Michael Lawson as we rocked various parties like Bared Soles, Melting Pot, and Kazulo. Initially I had hoped the improv orchestra would include ALL of my musical friends, and thought the quartet would provide a rhythm track for further development. Well, we did the session and when it was done, we had improvised some really killer music. Matt was able to play the way he wanted to with no club owners or tunnel vision band directors telling him what to do with his double bass pedal (which sounds like Lars Ulrich at his best), Sylvia got all crazy with her delays & ripping distortions, and Shosh pulled out her "late Miles" inspired wah wah guitar, complete with effects and fun sounds throughout the session. After listening to the tracks, I decided the CD was a complete work. I have always been a huge fan of Miles Davis and John Coltrane, who recorded entire albums like "A LOVE SUPREME" & "KIND OF BLUE" in one session. I've been developing the ability to create music on a telepathic level with my friends for years and find this the most enjoyable and fulfilling way to present music as art. After the initial session, Paul Petrissans laid down a few solo flute tracks and we selected the finest take as an interlude between songs. Jodan (formerly Jahwa) stopped by and picked up a sitar that I asked him to play on the end of the first track. Heath Mensher, a long time compadre who has witnessed my music career develop from the time I was thirteen was also invited to the initial session, locking him in an isolation booth with shakers, his native flute, bells, and a vocal mic. He and the whole band were also mixed live with dub efx and spacey sounds to a seperate track by Grisly Lab's number one engineer Dane Johnson. Matt Cusak and Dane helped create the interstellar sounds that you'll hear on the album.
