With their latest record, Bright Orange Tailspin, My Dear Ella has boldly announced their arrival on a scene hungry for great rock music and, beyond that, a great rock band. From the thundering assault of the opening Running Down, through the final hum of the dreamlike, psychedelic Head Down, My Dear Ella delivers a startling collection of raw-nerve, soulful songs layered in rich textures and performed with an urgency and spontaneous energy all too rare in today's music. Imagine Robert Pollard (GBV) fronting My Bloody Valentine, or Neutral Milk Hotel collaborating with Spiritualized. This psychedelic-laced swirl of heart, soul, and balls-out rock is especially arresting during the band's live performances, which hark back to the reckless brilliance and sheer stage presence of rock's greats. There's the sense that these guys are putting everything on the line, feeding off the crowd and each other, letting the tension build through the haze of smoke and lights and then letting it all go, through the sheer joy of playing together. It is clear that My Dear Ella is keen on writing their own chapter of rock history. My Dear Ella is guitarist/singer Eric Wallen, Synth/Rhodes player Amanda Brooks, drummer Jeff Dewitte, guitarist Chris Gray, and bassist Lance Westerlund. Working out of a secluded old house on the outskirts of Chapel Hill, NC, they took Wallen's introverted explorations of loss and yearning and transformed them into a swelling, explosive sonic panorama. From the melancholy acoustic epic, Hanging From The Sky, to the fist-pumping, tear-your-living-room-apart pop anthem, Driving in My Car, My Dear Ella's music has a depth and scope you'd only expect from a band daring to be great and going all the way to make it happen.
