From LMNOP Reviews The Waylons - The Waylons EP (Independently released CD EP, Pop) Beautifully absorbing guitar pop from Brooklyn, New York's The Waylons. This six-song EP presents a young band with a real knack for writing great guitar pop. The tunes are meaningful, sincere, and instantly memorable...and feature some wonderfully intertwined guitars. The overall sound is timeless and soothing. The vocals are right on target throughout. Killer tracks include "To Me," "Stunning," and "Whisky." What more can we say...? This excellent little EP paves the way for an upcoming full-length, due out later in 2005. (Rating: 5) From Black Table (www.blacktable.com) So who are The Waylons? They're like Wilco if Wilco snorted Jack Daniels. No. They're like Son Volt if Son Volt was really into breaking windows with their minds. No. They're like Green Day if Green Day played soft acoustic rock and had days that were slightly less green. No. They're like Paul Simon if Paul Simon had hair and mowed lawns for a living. Anyway, they absolutely rule. From Sponic Zine (www.sponiczine.com) Of all the things for which to praise a band or record, craftsmanship seems to be low on the list. It's no mean feat to be able to craft a genuinely good pop song, much less one that doesn't sound hollow or fake. The self-titled EP by Brooklyn's The Waylons has craftsmanship in spades. The six cuts here are, for the most part, a winning medley of R.E.M. jangle and country poetics. The charmingly crafted melodies and Karl Wachter's pleasingly shambling voice lend these songs a heft and professionalism that seems effortless. Tracks like "To Me" and "Twenty-Six" are chiming pop tunes that boast a nostalgic glow and wit. While "Stunning" is the disc's winner, a clear-cut single and terrifically lovely tune about a girl whose thoughts are in quotations," lurking on the margins is an enjoyable humor and penchant for amusingly adolescent (in the funny sense, not the angry, "I hate my parents" sense) put-downs; on the opening cut Wachter shoots down a former girlfriend who tells him that she has a new boyfriend, by telling her "I almost had a new boyfriend too." While some of the songs have an interchangeable quality, it's not a deal breaker and this self-titled debut is a solid introduction to a promising band.
