"Imagine rock, pop, and electronics creating a wall of sound where melody is the main character. That is perhaps the best way to describe The Watermarks' music." Fans of both rock and electronic music The Watermarks work hard to bridge the gap between the two genres. The band began out of a desire to re-inject life and fun in the music scene today. Their search is one to make music they really love in their hearts. Along the way, they have found a sound that is fresh and modern, but at the same time familiar. Perhaps the best way to categorize their music is Electro-Pop-Rock, but the band would rather not be placed under any category, because their best weapon is diversity. The Watermarks were formed in 2002 when Cesar Inserny (vocals, guitar, bass, electronics), who's previous band had just broken up, e-mailed Jason Petzold (bass, electronics, keys) after listening to his home made demo. Both were disappointed with today's popular music and began collaborating right away. The band's sound was further accented by the addition of Nicholas Phelps (bass, guitar, and vocals) and Matt Levine (keyboards, bass, guitar) in 2004. What is the most important to the band is the song, without good songs there is nothing. The lyrical content of The Watermarks songs are based mostly on personal experiences, sometimes happy, sometimes sad, sometimes funny, sometimes tragic...sometimes everything at once. The band is influenced by almost everything that surrounds them. The Jesus and Mary Chain, REM, U2, New Order, David Bowie, Primal Scream, Placebo, Super Furry Animals, Underworld, Cooper Temple Clause, Erasure, The Clash, The Ramones, The Cure, and Echo and The Bunnymen are just a few bands that they listen to religiously, but more than the sounds of these bands, The Watermarks are influenced by their ideals. All their work is done out of their home studio in Houston, TX, and though they want to make their product sound as professional as possible, they understand that the "outsider" ears of a producer can push their music to even higher levels. What they offer is their potential and not necessarily a finish product. The Watermarks work hard to ensure that their music is accessible to anyone who is willing to listen.
