On The Virtual Penguins, the guitar is a voice unto itself, sometimes taking the lead and sometimes adding counterpoint, but always a presence. The first single, "Fistful of Rhinos," is pop music at its most accessible, yet laced with enough of a sense of dark foreboding that it never slips into parody. To paraphrase Dylan, something is happening here, even if you don't know what it is. Other songs, like "The New Houdini" or "50 Million Years," could be outtakes from Murmur, with their spare sonic landscape and brooding lyrics. But comparisons are odious.
