In his eighth year as an independent performing artist, Michael Hayes has released five records with bands that include Lemonpeeler and more recently, the Vinyl Skyway. Hayes is respected as a prolific songwriter and uniquely talented singer, often compared to the likes of Gary Louris, Grant Lee Phillips, Jeff Tweedy and Chris Martin. When Lemonpeeler went on sudden hiatus in 2003, Hayes joined efforts with Andy Santospago, a gifted multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and composer. Together, they would produce a 15 track gem that features lush harmonies, catchy melodies and stunning guitarmanship. Their debut album was recorded at Q Division Studios and mixed by former Lemonpeeler producer and Boston rock legend David Minehan (the Neighborhoods/ Westerberg). The album, sent to only a handful of radio stations, earned airplay on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic ("Elvis Costello"). The band also shared the stage with Grammy award winner Tift Merritt at TT the Bears in Cambridge. The Vinyl Skyway‘s 2005 travels included New York (the Living Room), Los Angeles (Molly Malone's), Seattle (Conor Byrne Pub), San Francisco (Red Devil Lounge) and home-base Cambridge, MA (the Lizard Lounge, Zuzu, Club Passim, TT's, the Paradise Lounge). Hayes’ other collaborations have included performing with with the Splendid Nobodies and singing harmonies on Todd Thibaud’s 2005 release “Northern Skies.†Santospago performs in several other bands and is frequently called upon by local artists as a session player. With enough new material to fill two albums, the Vinyl Skyway plan to begin recording a full length CD this spring.
