In the autumn months of 2003, classically trained pianists Grant Hazard Outerbridge and Peter Bo Rappmund conceived the ethos of The Very Hush Hush. In the confines of their decrepit (some say haunted) house in Boulder, CO. By 2004 TVHH had risen through the ranks as one of Denver’s premier local acts, and had shared the stage with a slew of nationally and internationally acclaimed groups such as Stereolab, TV on the Radio, and Okervill River. The discrepancy between TVHH’s recordings and their live performance is very much intentional. Of course it is impossible to accurately capture live a hundred plus recorded tracks with a pared-down three piece. But that way the essence of each song is laid bare. Many of the band’s more melancholy and tender songs are reborn into an angry, caustic rock session with fuzzed-out bass, chainsaw synth riffs and sledgehammer drums. The difference can be at first contrary, but ultimately is much more emotive and true to the motifs nestled within. The Very Hush Hush creates haunting melodies out of necessity. Mourir C’est Facile explores the sad decay of industry, polluted relationships, and the resulting beautiful sunsets: it at once enraptures and bereaves as it searches for a concrete foothold in a transient and amorphous world; it is a sublime declaration that everything you experience—the hidden mantras, the garish filth, the unexpected happiness—is worthy of meditation and revelry.
