In early 2002, Jeff Gregory (formerly of Dollface, The Bugs, 13 Frightened Girls, etc.) returned to Los Angeles after a 6-month stint playing bass for Hushdrops in Chicago. With his other group, The Occupants Of Six Across, on temporary hiatus, Jeff had been working in his home studio on a solo project in a more guitar-driven direction. Although the original intention was to make a solo album that featured Jeff on almost all instruments and vocals with a few guest appearances from friends, as these songs began to form their identities it became apparent that only a proper band could do the works justice. With that in mind, Jeff recruited Cory Flanigan and Jeremy Kerner, two musicians with whom he had a working relationship in the past, in order to help complete the vision. In the process, unforeseen musical territory was uncovered. Jeremy and Cory have performed together under the name Solar Wimp for 9 years. Before that they were members of the post-psychedelic outfit Fast Food Revolution and The Bugs (then known as The Bugs Five). The first Migration rehearsals began in March 2002. Shorly after a warm-up gig at the now defunct LA club The Garage, the group started work on their debut full-length, Usually Destroyed. The title refers to an Aldous Huxley essay on language and historical cycles in the Middle East. The majority of the recording took place at Cory and Jeremy's home studio in North Hollywood, CA. It was mixed at Subspace Platform. Additional overdubs and submixing along the way occurred at Songworld in West Hollywood, CA. The album was completed in September 2004, approximately 2 1?2 years after the group's inception. Usually Destroyed accurately reflects the dystopian aesthetic of the group, with Cory and Jeremy's seismic rhythm section punctuating the icy, plexiglass guitars and narcotic vocals in an almost constant state of counterpoint. Touchstones include Sonic Youth, Guided by Voices, Wire, Urge Overkill, Frank Black and ZZ Top. Influences come from literature and film as well as living/working in and observing the information culture of LA and the individuals and structures within it. Lyrically, themes on Usually Destroyed include mass consciousness, extinction, deception, displacement, psychic barriers, terraforming, corporate mercenaries and helium mines. The Migration intend on spending the next year or so promoting Usually Destroyed and then writing and recording the follow-up.
