As veterans of the fertile Southern California music scene, The Appearance has come together to evolve over the last year and a half to meld some very diverse musical backgrounds. With influences from the 80’s to melodic punk to Motown, Alan Oakes (lead vocals, guitar), Bryan Lee(bass), Jon Brucher (drums), and Chad Kulengosky (lead guitar, vocals) have thrown their best into the pot and created a wicked stew. Producer/engineer Chris Fudurich(Finch, Nada Surf, RX Bandits, Matthew Sweet, The Outline, etc.) has helped the lads capture three-minute slices of charging melodies and heartfelt lyrics that will feed your brain and your feet in equal amounts. The Appearance is the brainchild of Michael Narlinger of Read The Footnotes Productions (The Appearance’s Executive Producer). Mike approached bassist Lee and convinced him to put together a group, who would then be given the time and necessities to hone their craft and give the biz their best shot. Punk and metal loving Lee had most recently been playing in a reggae band. He had been looking for a change because, as he says, “there’s punk rock in me†and he needed an outlet to play fast and hard. Lee and Narlinger’s first recruit was Alan Oakes, who both had known from the local scene a few years back, having occasionally shared the same stages. Oakes had been earning his stripes by playing guitar and contributing vocals for several local acts. Lee knew Oakes to be a good songwriter, as well as an experienced front man. Almost immediately, they started writing songs. Alan’s lyric writing is most definitely first person, a “reflection of the things that I’ve gone through… the struggles in trying to gain a footholdâ€. Like many other vocalists, Oakes who considers himself relatively serene offstage, comes alive onstage, expressing his lyrics, hoping to convey his stories and his feelings. With vocals and bass in place, the next step was to find a drummer to hold down the other half of the rhythm section. Enter Jon Brucher. Alan had known Jon from playing together in previous projects. Brucher had grown up around percussion. His father, a session drummer, always tried to do his best to steer him in the right musical direction. When Jon tried to buy his first album, he chose Vanilla Ice. Dad gently suggested James Brown instead. Another veteran of the local circuit, Brucher’s band stints have run the gamut from ska to rock to hip-hop. Confident in his abilities and a fantastic live drummer, he adds groove, bringing a funk and dance element to the band’s music. As the last member of the band to join, Chad was recommended by Jon. Regarded by all in the band as an amazing technical player, he cites Metallica, No Use For A Name, and Tool as favorite influences. Chad actually started out his career by playing bass, but soon realized that “four strings weren’t enough, I wanted moreâ€. Although he is the newest member, Chad took as big a part as the rest of the guys in the influence of The Appearance’s songwriting process. The boys are chomping at the bit to do it to you live. It always feels good to be on the ground floor of a new happening. Get ready to say, “I told you so…†Check out the artist's website: http://www.theappearancemusic.com Track List: 1.
