Based in Tempe, AZ, Shawn Johnson & the Foundation is a highly energetic and eclectic rock band. Shawn Johnson's brilliantly catchy acoustic and electric guitar lines combined with his powerfully poetic lyrics are enough to stand alone. But there's more! Troy Sekapquaptewa, bass, and Gannon Burleigh, drums, lay a rock solid foundation (thus the name) that pounds the band's music strait into your soul. Dave Morales combines beautiful melodies with rhythmic harmonies on alto saxophone, and at times even plays the role of a chordal instrument, such as piano. Shawn Johnson began playing solo acoustic shows in the Tempe music scene in 1995. After a few years, he put together a rotating band for studio work and gigs with 12 of his favorite musicians in the valley. Together they recorded his first album "Ego vs. Soul." The album received a great response on the local scene, so Shawn decided to solidify a steady group for gigs and the Foundation was born. Since then the band has released two full-length albums, "Heartstrong" and their latest release on Knot Known records, "Strength (of an Honest Thought)." The music is a mix of modern rock sounds with roots in folk. The band is often classified as pop/rock, alternative, acoustic rock, and singer/songwriter. Shawn Johnson & the Foundation has established a solid following in Tempe, AZ, and is currently expanding into new markets, including Tucson, Flagstaff, Denver, Los Angeles and San Diego. In addition to winning several awards locally, including "The Edge 106.3 FM Locals Only Competition," and being nominated in the Best Male Artist or Group category for the 2002 AIM Awards, SJF receives regular airplay on Phoenix Radio, including The Zone, 101.5 FM.
