Many bands dream about making it to the "Big Time," but for most it's still out of reach. The members of potemkin/square, however, say they're only a step away from making it reality.

The band was initially formed in 1999 under the name "The Ryan Tracy Band" a male /female dual vocal pop band--kind of a Fleetwood Mac, Natalie Merchant sound. After the release of Ryan Tracy Band's "Rain Wont Stop"(Signed to Colorado's Soiled Dove Records in 2000; released "Rain Won't Stop" June 2000 produced by Danny Seraphine), the band experienced many changes. They replaced a drummer, and then a Rich Ross came in after touring with the rock band The Samples as a heavy hitting bass player. Things were going good, then Ryan's long time friend and guitar player JD decided to move on. Rich recommended Terry Goldstein, his favorite local lead guitarist whom he had played with in a previous band called Bump. Josh Kyser also joined on drums at the same time. It was a different band now! With Ryan Tracy Band's first release, the band played the Denver circuit for 2 years and at their pinnacle, achieving the title of Westword Magazine's "Best Pop/Rock Band in Denver". Ryan felt that it had a lot to do with the new band members Rich Ross, Terry Goldstein, and Josh Kyser who helped take the band to the next level. Ryan says "We didn't trade in, we traded up." All of us thought we sounded much different than the original line up of the Ryan Tracy Band, and decided that when we would release a new CD we would change the name and thus unify us as a new entity.

Before, Ryan was doing much of the writing, and now the writing is evenly shared between the members of potemkin/square. Ryan thought this is absolutely the best line up we've had! Prior to the new studio dates our beloved drummer Josh decided to move on. We replaced him with the "monster drummer extraordinaire," Phil Martin. Josh contributed 3 fantastic drum tracks to the disk, which we LOVE, thus the 2 drummers featured on the cd. We now knew we had all the right people to do the kind of CD we thought could really go somewhere. We wrote new material, dumped some stuff, and 9 months later had something we were really proud of. This is now potemkin/square!

It's not hard to imagine some of potemkin/square's music on the radio. Many of their songs have a "polished" feel like those already played daily on pop radio. While they incorporate elements from other styles of music, it's best defined as somewhere between pop rock or adult contemporary. "We have sort of a kitchen sink element. We've got a folk singer, a couple of jazzers, a metal guy and this all comes into the mix. "It's contemporary rock and roll," Ryan said. "But very fresh sounding and new."

The band hopes you'll be hearing more of them on the radio in the near future. "The numbers are infinite, in terms of the number of people you can reach with a song on the radio." Ryan adds, "Another one of our goals would be to get on a tour with an established band and get in front of their fans. Due to the exposure you immediately have many more people who've heard your music."

Up to this point word of mouth has helped to grow the band's fan base, but now potemkin/square works to see if it'll get a helping hand up that last step to the "big time."
