Monuments is a loud four-pronged, dramatic rock band making noise in the insanely competitive New York music scene in Brooklyn and Manhattan. The three tracks on their debut EP - Worlds (Worlds, You and Landmine) are unique and unexpected, but catchy. Mike Cook and Dan Asher's dynamic, groove-heavy drum and bass provide the perfect backdrop for Gabriel Berezin's smoothly distorted guitar riffs and haunting, frustrated cathartic vocals. The songs among other things are about a paranoid New York guy having delusions, nightmares of the city collapsing, and obsessions with pathologically damaging women. It's heavy, but it always moves, so if you're gazing at your shoe it should be bouncing. Too proud to spend a boatload of money in a cramped, awkward New York studio, Gabe, Mike, and Dan elected instead to record Worlds confined to their cramped, awkward rehearsal space in the winter of 2005. To maintain a live, organic feel, each track was recorded in one take - no fancy tricks, just a tight band pounding out their songs in front of a bevy of microphones. While the guys in Monuments hate to play the "sounds like" game, feedback from fans with repeated exposure has revealed a vocal likeness to Thom Yorke & Neil Young, as well as guitar tones of My Bloody Valentine and grooves of The Secret Machines (yes, they obviously consider this a compliment). That said, they have created a sound that is exciting and difficult to describe, so it demands to be heard more than a few times through a good old fashioned stereo. (Music must avoid crappy laptop speakers at any cost!) Since recording Worlds, Monuments has recruited good friend, eleven-fingered guitar player and song-writer Gordon Hardin and are preparing to record a full length album in a much larger space (probably Gabe's living room?) in early 2006.
