Comprised of veterans of bands as diverse as Myssouri, Fifty-Year Storm, Lithonia Power Train, and the Positrons, Crybaby emerged from nowhere in early 2001 to quickly become a darling on the Atlanta music scene. Buoyed by a high-profile first-gig and by several self-released EPs, the band made a splash on local radio and in local venues. While the band is only in its first months, its members have been friends for over a decade and have played together in bands before. The friendship and chemistry goes a long way towards explaining how the band has been able to make such an impact in such a short time. Crybaby's sound is characterized by a textured, dark, Western sound (think Brian Eno meets a spaghetti western soundtrack!), with a balance of telecaster-twang and lush-layered riffs. Superimposed on top of the soundtrack is Kelly Sirmans' majestic vocals, which have drawn comparisons to P.J. Harvey and Beth Gibbons (Portishead). Early in 2001, Crybaby entered the studio with the intent of recording two EPs. The first, the self-titled Crybaby, features five tracks that were staples of the band's early sets. The songs here are characterized by hypnotic sonic structures that build up to dramatic conclusions. Kelly Sirman's chanteuse voice draws the listener into the web of the song with her torch-song power, and there's no escape. This document of the band's genesis is a must-have. *** This wonderful Atlanta band wastes no time. The masterful opener, "Kaleidoscopic Dreams" features jazzy drums, lovely shimmering guitar, and the knockout vocals of Kelly Sirmans. Sirmans is, quite simply, one of the most amazing singers I've ever heard. Her powerful voice is rich, versatile, sultry, spooky, and soulful. She belts out her songs with real emotion and conviction, too. Any man would give his right arm to be the subject of Sirmans' affections on the sexy and playful "Blue-Eyed Boy," but I pity the fool who is the object of her scorn on the following, terrific "All My Love." Her pipes occasionally threaten to overwhelm the music, but guitarist CJ Bargamian, drummer Mark Carbone, and basist Daniel Winn match her intensity with equally passionate and dunamic backing.
