Jeff is when Jake and Jamin create the music from the mind they share. "The Byzantine Empire" is the second disc from the brothers about whom the NASHVILLE SCENE says "They have figured out a way to organize noise music so it becomes accessible, without writing just boy-girl songs. There's a real maturity- they know exactly how long to keep doing something before it gets too boring." Burnette compares JEFF to Sonic Youth, "Talking Heads 77" and the sonic improvisation of Sonny Sharrock and Ornette Coleman." The Rage says "While we like to think that we were the first to tell the world about Jeff and properly tell the story of their label, Infinity Cat, the man most responsible for really telling the "world" about the band is Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore. Thurston not only signed Be Your Own Pet to his Universal-distributed label Ecstatic Peace, he has also been a vocal and very supportive fan of Jeff, inviting the band up to play shows with him and raving about the boys in the press. It's a twenty-nine minute picnic down in the dark of the sea of monsters. Thereon the album-length thought exposition wraps each staple lo-fi song with layers of entropic complexity to form startling hybrids. 'I Don't Want to Die (Space Mix)' takes up the duality, pouring from a tuneful mantra which could be imagined to originate in the cosmos' creaking sinews."
