Lucia Lie's live presence has never been accurately captured on tape. Their specific breed of slow sad melodic rock seemed to be meant only for the stage until they recently teemed up with engineer AJ Mogis (Lullaby For the Working Class, Saddle Creek Records) to record their new release, "I'll wake you in the morning."

On the new disk, Rob Connolly's songwriting takes a sharp turn for the dark side with dirty distorted guitars and screamed, yet still melodic, vocals. The rest of the band have also taken a giant leap from their self-titled debut EP (2002), with a stronger focus on the unrelenting rhythm section(Blaise Lanzetta on drums and Stephen Yonkin on bass) and more confident melodies displayed by the infamous lead cellist (Lorena Ruiz). Lucia Lie has come a long way from their roots in acoustic pop. With this much change over the span of two records, one has to wonder, what will come next?
