Kent Laubhan (last name rhymes with robin) has spent most of his life in Northwest OK. His debut album Toll Road, co-produced by Dave Skinner of 3 Legged Monkey, is acoustic rock driven by, for the most part, very strong acoustic rhythms. The gaps are filled with keyboards, piano, and electric guitar solos. The percussion is up front and as solid as concrete. One might hear hints of Bob Seger and John Mellencamp with a few bridges that turn so sharply, the first listen may sound a little confusing (Tori Amos, Led Zepplin). Lyrically, this guy is all over the map. A fragmented soul resulting from dishonesty comes out in the title cut "Toll Road". The unbelievable ugliness and damage left behind from pedophilia/child porn in "Call". "What's the Big Deal" deals with sexism and racism. "Baby Jane" is about a female vocalist trying to deal with the loss of her late husband/manager.
It's not all dark, though. "With You" is a gusher of a love song. "Dreamride" is about a horse ride from heaven that moves at lightning speed. Cradle-to-grave politics/government gets thrown into the mix in "Hands Off". There is the guy who is missing out on day-to day love and life in "Truth Hurts" and the "I'll go anywhere as long as you are with me" rocker, "We Can Take It".
All eleven songs are available for sampling, so go ahead, listen up! It's free! Some of the CDs have an incorrect e-mail address. Feel free to e-mail him thru cdbaby.com for song lyrics, comments, etc. He thanks you for listening.
