KENJIKLAY was born of equal parts inspiration and desperation in December 2002. David Kenji Sumi and Klayton Elliot Kendall, college grads working the graveyard shift at Borders in Seaside, California, shelving books by moonlight for a pittance and a pat on the back, decided to take a risk, go even further into debt, buy a bunch of musical equipment, and start a band. Two months later they found themselves recording a dozen new songs and playing various gigs in the Monterey and Santa Cruz areas. The resulting album, Rebirth of American Music, was released in May 2003.
