I wish that I could say that I come from a long line of musicians, having grown up with random artists jamming in my parent’s kitchen and holding impromptu concerts in the living room. But, that’s not my past… The truth of the matter is that my family couldn’t be less musical if they tried. I grew up listening to bad bubblegum music on the radio, excited by the new number one every week on Top of the Pops, and making my own musical instruments with shoeboxes and rubber bands. My parents thought that musicians were bums and slackers. They probably still do. I had a largely unremarkable childhood. My family moved from Scotland to the sleepy streets of Adelaide when I was eight, and I spent the next ten years finding and losing myself again as I went along. In true tortured-melodramatic-musician style, I dropped out of university when I was eighteen, fleeing to Melbourne in the hope I’d discover what I wanted to do with my life. I didn’t. Which led me to London in the summer of 2004, armed with only a suitcase and a rose-coloured view of one of the most exciting/loneliest cities in the world. Quickly trapped in the 9-5 cycle, and living in an alienating share house, my only friend was song writing. In hindsight, this was a good thing – it gave me the push that I needed. I write songs about my life and the lives of people surrounding me, from rueing the fact that I wore my best underwear for nothing, to panicking about the fact that Buddy Holly died when he was so young, still managing to achieve so much. So, now I’m out on a stage near you, strumming my guitar for different bars and different faces. Hopefully I’ll see you sometime….
