Dave Day has a lifetime of experience adding his thoughtful bass lines to other people's projects. Now, on his first CD, "The Serpent's Tooth Project", the Southern California based musician celebrates his own influences.
While most bassist's solo projects center around 4 string displays of pyrotechnics, Day's "The Serpent's Tooth Project", is focused more on the ensemble, stretching out on free form instrumentals that fall mainly into a rock vein. Working with several players that he's grown musically and personally close with over the years, "The Serpent's Tooth Project" is unique in that the basic tracks of nearly all the titles presented are the result of genuinely improvisational pieces recorded on the fly. The idea of presenting his bass riffs to the others only minutes before hitting the big red button, relying on collective creativity and musical familiarity to establish basic tracks is unusual and refreshing. Overdubs were kept to a minimum and the mixes are no-frills in accordance with the project's "one off" concept.
Dave Day's "The Serpent's Tooth Project" is a collection that will appeal to those who enjoy music echoing the classic rock "jams" of the seventies. Kick back and enjoy.
