BURNING RIVER BAND- “1000 MILES”
Alanna J. Klapp

The Burning River Band is an up-and-coming groove band based in the Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame city of Cleveland, Ohio. They are currently on the road in the Midwestern United States supporting their new album, “1000 Miles.” They play an eclectic blend of rock, bluegrass, funk, and country, all of which will get you dancing. Your feet won’t be able to stay still.
I’ve been a fan of BRB for five years. I watched them get their start throwing small festivals on a local farm and playing various venues in Northeast Ohio. I witnessed the members change and listened to the music develop. The band’s first official album, appropriately titled “1000 Miles,” is the culmination of a musical identity formed over the last six years. One listen to the first track, “Steel and Stone,” and the rhythmic talent of Jason “wonderboy” Hastings on the drums will prove it. Hard to believe that at the time the CD was recorded, he’d only been playing with the band for three months.
My favorite song is “That Do,” also known as “The Hair Song.” If this song doesn’t get you laughing and shaking your booty, you need to check your pulse! Listen for the solo from bassist Andy Shepherd in the middle of the tune. It’s funkilicious. Which is one of many great words to describe all nine songs on this album.
Another of my favorites is “Shoreline.” It makes me feel like dancing barefoot on a sandy beach, despite the frigid conditions outside my window.
I’ve been listening to all kinds of bands for as long as I’ve been listening to BRB. There are bands I listen to for the vocals, and there are those that I listen to for the jams. My favorite thing about BRB is they have the whole package: vocals and jams. Check out Sean Jenkins voice and his guitar, especially the slide on “Ramblin on My Mind.” The jam on “1000 Miles” will take you to (insert your own happy place here) before gently landing you back on the ground. At fourteen minutes, it’s the longest song on the CD, and the jam is simply sick. Also listen for the instrumental towards the end of “WV Miner”- featuring Eric Sargent who delivers a stellar funk riff that brings the jam to a dynamic climax.
Get the CD and listen to what I’m talking about, then go to a show. You can get all the details on the band at www.burningriverband.com. At the last show I attended, a sold-out Winter Bash in January of 2006 in Columbus, Ohio, I interviewed a jubilant music-lover named Sonia. I asked her if she owned a BRB CD. She smiled, told me yes, then said, “Everyone should own one.”
I couldn’t agree more.
