Mike Bethmann (vocals, guitar) and Jon Sulkow (bass) formed Tugboat Annie while attending the University of Buffalo in 1993. From their first demo "El Mar" (recorded by Robby Takac of the Goo Goo Dolls, 1993) the band has been featured in numerous albums and singles, starting with their first full length "Superfriends" on Sonic Bubblegum/Cargo Records in 1995 to worldwide acclaim.

The band relocated to Boston in 1996 and recruited Jay Celeste, a buffalo native, to fill the lead guitar slot. While early Tugboat releases are best characterized by a relatively minimalist guitar sound, Celeste brought an entirely new dimension with intricate guitar structure and carefully measured doses of distorted drenched guitars.

Tugboat Annie signed with Big Top Records in 1997 and released "Wake Up and Disappear" which earned them "Best Rock Band '97" from Boston Magazine and "One of the Best Up and Coming Rock Acts of '97" by the Boston Phoenix. Their appearance on HBO's "Reverb" and "Best of Reverb" enhanced the band's recognition. The band's next release "Separation Songs", a 6 song CDep illustrates the bands' evolution in song-writing showcasing their ability to craft catchy pop songs with the keen sense of restraint, marked by shimmering layers of guitars and Mike Bethmann's signature emotional rasp.

"Separation Songs" was recorded by Matthew Ellard primarily at Ft Apache Studios in Cambridge, MA.

The band continues to play on the road to sold out crowds headlining and supporting shows with Luna, The Goo Goo Dolls, Buffalo Tom, The Promise Ring, and Sunny Day Real Estate.
