New Haven CT's rocket west have been in the game for only a year but are endlessly writing new material and expanding their horizons....initially an alternative/emo 3 piece, they are now a four piece, featuring an ex-member of Boston punk heroes Fastbreak. The sound of "The Worst Kid" is on the surface poppy punk-emo, but a closer listen reveals darker emotional intent and a shunning of traditional song structure. "This is a young band, but I can't get the '80s out of my head when I hear Rocket West. You know, the good '80s--punky yet melodic and talented scruffy kids in the basement. Rocket West sounds like some of the favorite Boston bands of my youth, like the Outlets or La Peste, with the bonus of unexpectedly lengthy crunchy instrumental interludes that demonstrate the band's confidence and talent. They know how to use a well-place power chord to slow things down, speed things up, or create suspense. This perfectly mixed EP is poppy enough to be commercial and raw enough to be interesting. Sometimes the nasty and sullen lyrics, with their harmonies and answer-vocals, sound like a pose, but Rocket West rocks hard and fast enough to evade such analysis. Highlight: "Can't Ignore," with an intro that sounds like a distortion of the old MTV theme and a terrific "Can't let you go" lyric." -Christopher Arnott, The New Haven Advocate (7.25.02) "The Connecticut quartet known as Rocket West sound like Blink 182's mature older siblings on their six song release. While the energy and spirit of punk rock is very much apparent, the inklings of a band that wants to be known for more than cutting their teeth on DIY patch wearing punk rock is very much intact as well, as RW walk the line between the Foo Fighters and indie rock everywhere ("So Perfect"). It's this combination, as well as their hook happy songwriting ability, that makes Rocket West a standout amongst the skater and punk rock contingent. A bit darker than your average bouncy band ("Can't Ignore"), this is what punk sounds like when it grows up. A strong showing by a band that obviously knows better and isn't ashamed of indulging in their guilty pleasures." -Mike SOS, www.316productions.com Check out the artist's website: http://www.rocketwest.net Track List: 1.
