Miranda Sound has one request for the listener: bury your preconceptions about modern rock. While the band makes no claim of revolutionizing or reinventing American rock music, they are proud of their honest, melodic sound; as captured on their debut album Baby Inertia. Recorded at Workbook Studio in Columbus with Neal Schmitt (Pretty Mighty Mighty), Baby Inertia exhibits the quartet's penchant for writing emotionally charged rock songs. And despite many diverse influences and flagrant mood swings, the album flows confidently thanks to Schmitt's creative engineering and mixing. "Baby Inertia draws from myriad influences: Sunny Day Real Estate's wandering melodies, Guided by Voices' choruses and a touch of Radiohead's shifting guitar textures. Still, Peake's songs follow their own modern-rock muse." - Aaron Beck & Rob Messenger, Columbus Dispatch, 3-01 "With the dreamy pop of Jeff Buckley and a dose of Van Halen grandeur cited as musical touchstones, the band unloads an 11-track swirl of eerie guitars, bubbling keyboards and random cosmic instrumentation: E-bows, sleighbells, the occasional Farfisa organ." - Rob Harvilla, The Other Paper, 3-01 "The disc benefits from a very lush and meticulous production that emphasizes all of Miranda Sound's traits and a few tracks are certifiable pop gems, such as the punchy Souvenir and the brooding Cast Anchor Cast." - Brian O'Neil, Columbus Alive, 3-01 Miranda Sound is the brainchild of the band's two founding members: Billy Peake (vocals/right guitar) and Sean Sefcik (bass). Peake and Sefcik met each other while attending Bowling Green State University (Ohio), volunteering at a campus indie station. The two became fast friends and formed the band in the fall of 1998. They eventually relocated to Columbus where they met their first and only permanent drummer Scott Haynes. With a handful of new songs, the trio began playing Columbus in December 1999. They quickly landed gigs with some of indie rock's finest: including The Sheila Divine (Boston), Silo The Huskie, Templeton, Go Robot Go, Rockets To Mars (Cincinnati) and The Bed Devils (New York City). A quiet yet consistent buzz followed the band as they began recording at Workbook Studio in June 2000. From a production standpoint, the recording sessions were very experimental. Originally, the band planned on only recording songs that had been tested live. However, the progressive nature of Workbook inspired spontaneous creativity. Songs like Roanoke, Dry Mouth and Fort were written in a practice session days before they were recorded. Another gem, Cast Anchor Cast, was composed in the studio in about 30 minutes. To broaden the band's sound, Peake asked his good friend Dan Gerken to play Fender Rhodes, Farfisa, and some guitar on Baby Inertia. Gerken, a disciple of J. Mascis, Sebadoh and Radiohead, began contributing on a regular basis. By the end of the sessions, he was a full time member of Miranda Sound. With a fine record in tow, Miranda Sound has big plans for the future. The album is available nationally via www.mirandasound.com. An extensive CMJ/College Radio push is scheduled for early fall 2001. Check out the artist's website: http://www.mirandasound.com Track List: 1. Roanoke 2. Souvenir 3. Dry Mouth 4.
