Iowa City is going to be a musical hot spot in the near future and Alto Heceta is going to part of it. In the past year, the band has worked diligently on writing, recording, and producing what has now developed into the debut full length album called This Distance This Weekend. Its full of the color, the reflection, and the perseverance that a midwestern autumn weekend entails. Matt Heideman (of Burn Disco Burn and Racecar Radar), Dino Balocchi (of Nolan and Racecar Radar), Adam Penly, and Tim Borkowsky formed Alto Heceta in 1998 and came out with their first effort called the Safe in Stereo EP, in 2000. After charting in CMJ and doing midwestern shows following the release, they teamed up with another local Iowa City band, the Speed of Sauce, and released the Alto Heceta/Speed of Sauce Split CD EP. Reviews followed the band all over. The band has been compared to the likes of Swervedriver, Smashing Pumpkins, Shiner, and Jimmy Eat World. That should give you an idea of what exactly the band might remind you of. Regardless of who you want to compare them to, its just a band trying to write songs that are interesting and fun to play. Outside of that, they just hope you like listening to their songs. Alto Heceta has shared the stage with just about every big name in indie rock, including Rainer Maria, Cursive, Desaparecidos, Dismemberment Plan, Karate, Rilo Kiley, The Gloria Record, Tekulvi, Little Joe Gould, Camden, Jets To Brazil, and many more.
