Late night / early morning story songs of love, solitude, and new beginnings. Compiled by Ralph Alfonso. *With 7 previously unreleased tracks. "There's no destination really. There never is. You glance over.... she's fallen asleep, head propped against the window, lulled by the sound of the car stereo and the calm of motion... Only here, in the heart of the city at night, is there any solace. What is there for us at the end, and do we want it to end? The only thing that's important is that the journey begins..." Ralph Alfonso (Diodes, New York Rocker, RALPH zine) The first in a series of cool compilations based on a specific theme, assembled and produced by noted writer / musician / designer and 1977 punk new wave pioneer Ralph Alfonso. Previously unreleased tracks by Kimberley Rew (Soft Boys guitarist), Katrina & The Waves (a studio out-take from their 1983 debut lp), Tom Wilson (Junkhouse, Blackie & The Rodeo Kings), the late BB Gabor, Orchid Highway (produced by Steven Drake of The Odds), Jeffrey Morgan & Dean Motter (creator of the Mr. X comic), and Jackson Phibes (Forbidden Dimension). Rarely heard tracks by Paul Hyde (Payolas), Kevin Kane (Grapes of Wrath), Lauren Agnelli (Washington Squares - produced by John Wesley Harding & Chris Von Sniedern), and Kevin Quain are augmented by Bongo Beat stalwarts Dave Rave (Teenage Head) and RALPH (beatnik jazz). Full liner notes and information on each track. 16 pages of liner notes! Cover art by Tom Bagley (aka Tomb). ------------------------------------------------------------------------ CHECK OUT THIS REVIEW FROM AMERICANA UK: Various Artists "Driving In The Rain 3am: Songs To get Lost With" (Bongobeat Records 2002) The seemingly unstoppable flood of music from Canada is further highlighted by this eclectic 17 track collection ranging from the slick'n smooth guitar power pop of The Orchid Highway and the criminally under-rated former Soft Boys guitarist and sometime Wave (of Katrina and the) Kimberley Rew, through to the jazz journey of Dave Rave & Mark McCarron and the noir Vaudeville of Waits-like Kevin Quain. Katrina & The Waves offer up an unreleased 80's track highlighting Katrina's voice, literally reincarnated from Motown and Stax records whilst acoustic Tom Wilson comes on like prime Fred Neil. True, there's a couple of less than essential instrumentals here but overall this album hangs together really well. Lovingly compiled by sometime Canadian beat poet Ralph Alfonso (who has three of his own tracks here) and with 16 pages of comprehensive liner notes this is an object example of how to do a sampler; step on the gas and go. Highly recommended. Check out the artist's website: http://bongobeat.com Track List: 1. Orchid Highway, Opiate 2. Kimberley Rew, Restless Ocean 3.
