Singer/songwriter Michael Landgarten has been performing and recording since 1993. His most recent release "Sooner or Later" contains bluesy, rootsy and sometimes country material in the tradition of Landgarten's other efforts - thoughtful, rockin' and a cut above. The Maine-based musician has a gritty sound that conjures up comparisons to John Hiatt, Bruce Springsteen and Steve Earle. He impressively stocks this disc with meaty rockers and quieter, introspective tunes. The rousing title track gets the record off to a strong start, while the spare "I Was So Blind" is a particularly moving song of remorse. Sooner or Later features some of Michael's original band family: Jamie Decato on drums, Jamie's brother Chris Decato on everything (guitar, organ, producer, engineer) and newcomer Rob Gourlay on bass. From 1996 to 1998 Landgarten fronted the rock band The Zeftrons. When you heard The Zeftrons, you were hearing Michael Landgarten: for it was his songs and his drive that made them what they were. The Zeftrons CD was enthusiastically received. "Mining the rich resources of American music, the Zeftrons come screaming out of the starting blocks" HiFi, Sept.1996. Landgarten has been recognized as "an impressive songwriter" with "heartwrenching lyrics and moody melodies" Casco Bay Weekly 9/96 & JAM 9/96. No Depression wrote "Michael Landgarten...plays hard, direct, thoughtful American music. Look for traces of Hank Williams, Steve Earle, John Hiatt and classic Bob Dylan. With their lyrical depth and relentless hooks, these songs won't leave you alone." While the reach of Landgarten's reputation remained regional, the important stuff - his songs - reached much farther. In addition to national notice by the alt-country community, the songs from the Zeftrons' classic debut CD have been featured on many major TV shows, like Ed, The Real World, Showtime original movies and a slew of daytime dramas, including Young and the Restless and Days of Our Lives. Ready for more national exposure, Landgarten entered the studio in early 2001 to begin work on his solo debut, Sooner or Later.
