Dustworks was originally conceived at the University of Wisconsin by brothers Casey and Ryan Stang in late 2001. Adding keyboardist Tim Larsen, drummer Brandon Palmer, and guitarist/pedal-steel player Joe Muth, the lineup of Dustworks was finalized in 2002.

With the lineup complete, Dustworks spent late-2002 and early-2003 finishing a set of web-based demos in their studio, based in a 150-year old house located deep in the woods surrounding Milwaukee. Recorded with their expanding collection of vintage instruments, and incorporating some of the ambient electronic elements of their live sound, these demos helped to introduce clubs and listeners to the sound of Dustworks. Compared to artists as disparate as Bob Dylan, Wilco, and Joy Division in the press, Dustworks spent the next year playing shows at clubs such as The Cactus Club, Points East Pub, The Annex, and Shank Hall.

In early 2004, Dustworks began work on a new series of recordings, produced by the band. They enlisted production and banjo-playing assistance from Jack Rodee of Spill and Michelle Anthony, and field recordings/moog work from Adam Dingledein. The first of these recordings, the Atlas EP, was mixed by Jack Rodee, and mastered by Trevor Sadler at Mastermind Productions. Echoing the Big Pink-era of The Band and Notorious-lineup of The Byrds as well as current bands like Grandaddy and Dios, the Atlas EP incorporates homemade sound-effects, antique organs, analog synths, and pedal-steel guitar into its songs, grounded in the stark emotion of Depression-era folk and country music and refracted through noise-pop melodics.
